Granny Takes A Trip
Kingston Pop Museum Presents “Granny Takes A Trip”, An Exhibit of Mid-Century Pop-Culture From Warhol’s Rejection Letter to Custom Cars
Take a glimpse into museum owner and curator John Stavros’ unbelievable private collection, on show and for sale for the first time ever.
KINGSTON, NY—The Kingston Pop Museum is best known for its eclectic visual arts experiences, which highlight the works of globally established and locally up-and-coming artists. But its upcoming exhibition, Granny Takes A Trip, blazes a new trail by showcasing an astonishing array of pop-culture collectibles.
Granny Takes A Trip opens:
Saturday, November 16 (4-10 pm).
A special Collector’s Preview will be held on November 15 (4-8 pm). Press is invited to attend!
The concept connects the nostalgic love and wisdom imparted by grandmas living it up in the mid-1900s era of peace and love, to the unique, beautiful, odd, and otherwise trippy culture that developed and flourished during that time. The collection spans from the late 1960s to the early ‘80s, when celebrities in music, art, and fashion gave momentum to the ultimate revolution that would spark rebellious youth to develop the Glam Mod scene.
Over the decades, museum curator and owner John Stavros has amassed an impressive collection of art, furniture, personal items, and more from some of the most iconic names then and still today.
Among dozens of pieces, you’ll find:
- Andy Warhol’s letter of rejection to MOMA (1956)
- A full set of four rare and highly coveted Beatles dolls (among the very few collections in the US)
- Furniture that belonged to pop-culture industry titans like Bill Aucoin (former manager of KISS) and Bob Guccione (founder of Penthouse)
- Various rock' n roll memorabilia, such as four Volkswagens custom-painted by artists, including a Westfalia that belonged to the road manager of the Dave Matthews Band, and much more.
Granny Takes A Trip opening night is Saturday, November 16 and Kingston Pop Museum—located in a historic building on Broadway in Kingston—plans to celebrate with an exciting evening of art and music, including an international group art exhibit and live music performances from Ramona Lane (of New Paltz) and NYC artists SoulCake, Walter G. Steding, Mark Hawdon, and Puma Perl + Joe Sztabnik.
On November 15, Stavros will open the doors early for a preview of the collection; we invite you to join! Please RSVP if you’d like to attend: kingstonpopmuseum@gmail.com
